Plastic bags Banned in Udupi


 Udupi: Consumer Forum CMC President Kiran Kumar said that plastic carry bags will be banned from Udupi with effect from Sep 1, 2012, and Rs. 80 lakhs have been earmarked to take up management of solid waste.

“We collected as many as 315kgs of plastic recently when we raided the shops and other outlets in the city. The CMC has plans to set up bio methodology and waste energy plants to make use of solid and wet waste. Door-to-door collection of waste by the members of SHG’s will be made strict and only a nominal amount will be charged”, he said

Regarding the shortage of water in summer, Mr. Kumar said, “The deputy commissioner is informed about the mechanized desilting of the Swarna River in the catchment area. This will help in providing water to the people in the city during summer when there is water shortage.”

Replying to another query over several manhole openings in the midst of the stretches, Mr. Kumar assures of the measures to cover up the manholes that causes problem to the people.

Steps will be taken over the lack of maintenance of public toilets especially in the government bus stop and whoever does not follow the hygienic norms will be penalized heavily. -MT-
