UDUPI : Ravivarma Kumar, senior advocate and former
president of Karanataka Backward Classes Commission, said on Sunday that
it was incumbent upon the people with progressive bent of mind to
protest against reactionary thoughts and acts in the coastal region.
He was speaking at the inauguration of the Forum for Inter-Faith Relationship (Jati Mukta Sambandha Vedike) here. A State-level convention was also held by the forum on the occasion.
Mr. Kumar said the silence of progressive people was responsible for the erratic behaviour of the maths and the reactionary groups. If people protested or objected, these groups would stop their wayward behaviour. It was essential for the people to stand up and say “no” to such reactionary thoughts and acts. If people remained silent, it would only help the reactionary and communal forces to grow.
The forum was set up to promote inter-caste and inter-religion marriages and cordial relations among communities. Those who wanted to have an inter-caste or inter-religion marriage should know that there was no legal bar on them, Mr. Kumar said.
Writer H.L. Keshava Murthy said that about four decades ago, youths in the State were charged with idealism and wanted to fight the caste system. Some people and even educational institutions had then changed their names so that they did not get identified by their caste. But now the situation had changed.
Speaking at the valedictory function, writer G. Rajashekhar said Karnataka had been turned into a laboratory for Hindutva policies. There were hardly any protests when the Government decided to do away with eggs in schools.
