Bhatkal Muslims are not terrorists – Assistant SP Reddy

Bhatkal : Addressing the gathering at a meeting organized by representatives of various jamaaths and organizations such as Majlis-e-Islah-o Tanzeem in Bhatkal, Assistant SP Sudhir Kumar Reddy said that Bhatkal is a city just like any other city and not the centre of terrorist activities.

The meeting was organized to condemn a recent report on terrorist activities in Bhatkal published in a Kannada daily.

According to the report, grenades, RDX, and AK-47s can be freely transported in Bhatkal and that certain places in Bhatkal, including its mosque areas, are prohibited zones.

Rubbishing the report, Mr. Reddy said that Bhatkal has no prohibited zones and that no terrorist activities have been reported in Bhatkal. Action will be taken against the Kannada newspaper for attempting to destroy the peace and harmony of Bhatkal, he added.

Tazneem General Secretary Mohiddin Altaf Kharouri said that such prejudiced reports against Bhatkal Muslims have upset the residents of Bhatkal. Stating that action should be taken against terrorists if any, but publishing such false reports serves no purpose, he accused Kannada dailies of conspiring to tarnish the image of Bhatkal Muslims.

Tanzeem Vice President Inayatullah Shabandri said that reporters who write such false reports must be imprisoned, adding that the citizens of Bhatkal will agitate against any further attempts to tarnish the image of the city.

Parvez Kasimji, former president of Tanzeem, read out a memorandum and demanded that action must be taken against the newspaper under Section 153(a). He said that representatives of various jamaaths will lodge separate complaints against the newspaper.

Accepting the memorandum, Additional SP Subhash Gudimane said that action will be taken against anyone who disrupts peace in the society. Assuring the gathering that he will discuss the issue with higher officials, he congratulated the jamaaths and organizations for expressing their concerns in a peaceful manner. -MT-
