Mangalore, Aug 6, 2012 : Heavy
rains lashed against the coastal regions of Karnataka, causing traffic
blocks and land slides along NH234, which connects Mangalore to Kadur,
on Aug 5, Sunday.
Rains caused a land slide at Jappelpade, 2kms near the border of DK, leading to a traffic block in the Ghats. Vehicles had to be diverted through Mudigere to Janapura to Hanbal to Anne Mahal to NH75 connecting Mangalore to Bangalore. On the other hand, vehicles bound to Chikmagalur from Dharmasthala had to go back.
An auto rickshaw plunged into a 15-ft deep gorge near the place of the land slide.
According to police sources, the land slide is now being cleared so that traffic can continue to move smoothly. Earth excavators have been brought to the spot to clear the mess.
The local people, however, are afraid that continuous rainfall might cause more land slides and prevent restoration work.
The land slide has caused no damage to live and property, but there has been increased inflow into reservoirs because of the rain. MT
